At NYU sophomore year, I was working at K&M, and doing whatever to be able to pay for photo paper and my rent while going to school. I saw a listing for a creative designer intern at Rocawear so I went there with no portfolio and a .jpg of the first LOLA skateboard we were making (before any T-shirts). I said I know more about Jay-Z than you and I will work harder than you so hire me for free. They did and I become a junior designer there at 21. It was a lot of fun, I met Charlotte & Hilary, interviewed Dame Dash, helped Kai Regan on one of the campaigns, met Matt Salacuse, and learned how a multi-million dollar business was run. The Creative Director, Chad Hogan went on to become the Creative Director at Vitamin Water, where I temporarily followed him, right before Coca-Cola bought them out, which was an exciting time.

Years later, the same team is still at Rocawear, in higher positions. They are doing incredible job steadily increasing business in a recession economy, and in the saturated urban market. Jay-Z is actively involved and they are working on a complete rebranding for the 10th anniversary.

Last month, I completed a photoshoot for them in Chinatown for Rocawear Kids. The first of the ads are starting to come out in national magazines. Last week, for our second shoot, we shot Porshia Coleman as a prelude to the soon to be released Lingerie Campaign. With Gin Lane we are also developing a new digital marketing presence for them which is a huge undertaking. It is cool to deal with the same people working on exciting projects that I did a few years ago when I was taking the subway in from 15 stops off the L train in Brooklyn the entire summer to intern, backpack full of LOLA t-shirts.
