Last night was incredible beyond all accounts, with over $150,000 raised for the NBDC, the largest crowd the Bowery Hotel has ever seen for an event, it was a smashing success. The artwork was great, the crowd was great, the night are great.
I’m a sucker for art and charity. Don’t get me wrong, I respect the contributions made on that night. It’s just interesting to me. Really interesting. I’m a Lower East Sider and have lived here for all 17 years of my life. I’m also an artist. Call me cynical, but the attitudes and tastes of the art world in this area are changing. It’s come a long way since The Garden Of Eden and indie exhibitions in peoples homes and rented lofts, and I’m not sure I like where it’s going.
I think any true LES’er can agree. We’re getting the wrong kind of crowd down here because they think it’s so “artsy cool”. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see the work that night- but I have seen work at places like the Half Gallery (their current exhibition really irks me). I know my art history, and I know that in the 70’s and 80’s artists came down here to escape the elite and pretentious. I have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that that’s where the art world going in the Lower East Side. I just really, really hope that the art shown at the Bowery Hotel broke away from that.
