Perhaps the most striking aspect about Dubai is the overwhelming amount of construction and growth the city has been undergoing for more than 15 years. As you look around, landscape is dominated by completed skyscrapers, half completed skyscrapers, and cranes facilitating this process. Dubai is home to over 25% of the world’s cranes. You cannot look anywhere without seeing one crane, let alone dozens, which is often the case. Unlike anywhere else in the world, the construction and development companies in Dubai appear determined to continue developing and expanding Dubai as rapidly as possible, with what seems like no end in sight.

I was able to visit Dubai for 4 days in January 2008, which is there winter. Summer in Dubai is usually unbearably hot, with the average temperature reaching 50 C, or 122 F. The temperature was mild while I was there, hovering around 20 C, or 70 F. The only problem was that there were torrential downpours for the entirety of my stay. It is not everyday one goes to the desert and sees flooding on the roads. To add to this misery, George Bush was in town meeting with UAE Royalty, staying at the Burj Al Arab Hotel, which is ½ mile from the Royal Mirage, where I was staying. The secret service closed all roads within a couple miles, so nobody could leave the hotel for an entire day. Despite the weather and a visit from Premier Bush, I was able to see a few things. Here is my take on Dubai:

First Class Accomodation:

The One and Only Royal Mirage Hotel & Resort- “One of the Leading Small Hotels of the World” The Mirage is a beautiful private resort hotel that offers luxurious comfort and privacy. Outsiders are not allowed into the hotel to use any facilities but the restaurants, so your privacy is guaranteed. The Mirage has 1 kilometer of private beach front, as well as three large pool and sun deck areas. My opinion is that the Mirage is a classier, and less expensive place to stay than the more widely known Burj Al Arab.

Dining:

All Dining and Nightlife centers around the many hotels in Dubai, mostly because alcohol is illegal outside of hotels and resorts. There are many great restaurants in Dubai that span all varieties of cuisines. Some restaurants to check out are:

Tagine- located in the Royal Mirage Resort offering delicions Moroccan cuisine.

EauZone- situated on the main pool in the Royal Mirage resort offering Asian-Fusion cuisine.

Al Mahara- in the Burj Al Arab, This is the most expensive and popular restaurant in Dubai serving seafood as you watch the fish and sharks swim by you in an enormous fish tank situated in the middle of the restaurant.

Shopping:

.

The Mall Of The Emirates- The newest mall in Dubai and the largest offers everything from designer fashion to discount clothing, electronics, groceries, and even an indoor ski slope, called Ski Dubai. The ski slope is definitely worth checking out although the Mall of the Emirates can be a bit large and overcrowded at times.

Burjuman Mall- This is the best mall in Dubai, offering high fashion stores in a smaller, more elegant, and relaxed setting. You will find everything here: Hermes, Harvey Nichols, Gucci, Prada, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, etc.

Things I wish I did:

Tonight Tonite 2nite

February.27.2008 @ 6:48 am by emmett from lola | Posted in Amazing, Educational, Family, Fun

Last night, instead of the normal stay-at-home Tuesday evening, we enjoyed a fun-filled, interesting affair. An eclectic mix, to say the least, gathered at Boucaro. LA, Uptown Downtown, Hamptons, … everyone was gathered together. Samuel and Machine from Team Facelift performed a few songs (I will upload videos tomorrow), people hung out, it was fun. We then went back to LOLA Sag town (Caroline rode a dump truck), and ate a ton of shrimp & lobsters. Happy birthday to Chrissie Miller from Sophomore also! Check out the whole gallery.

Beyonce made headlines by debuting her new blonde hairdo and chose a fire-pump plastered with the gritty old New York stickers of LOLA as well as Reason, Eriffs, and Supreme to do so.

A Grand Night for All

February.25.2008 @ 3:04 pm by emmett from lola | Posted in Amazing, Family, Party, Photography

Our good friend Zak and his lovely fiancee, Alex held their engagement party atop the Gramercy Park Hotel on Saturday. There was lots of great people, food, drinks, and laughs to go around for everyone there. Check out the photos in the gallery, and there will be more galleries to come this week. I am sitting on a fair amount. -Emmett
